When Jon Rahm announced last week that he would not participate in the new one TGL, the new indoor golf league led by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroyrumors erupted that the Basque golfer might be planning to jump from PGA Tour in LIV Golf. However, McIlroy doesn’t see it that way.
The winner of four majors spoke to reporters at a press conference he held this Monday to present his team at TGL, Boston Common, and made sure that Rahm gave him the impression that he was staying with the American circuit.
“I talked to Jon a few days ago and I’d be surprised if that happened… I’m sure Jon is a PGA Tour player,” McIlroy said.
Rahm, reigning Masters champion and 2021 US Open champion, announced he would not play in the TGL on Thursday after being included in the initial list of 24 players to participate in the league.
“I am saddened to confirm that I will not be participating in the first season of TGL,” Rahm wrote on social media. “While I think it’s a great opportunity, right now it will require a level of commitment that I can’t offer. Best of luck to all (involved) and may the best team win.”
A statement from TGL officials said they “understand that players have to balance many different aspects of their professional and personal lives and respect Jon’s choice and wish him the best.”
Rahm has not been as critical of LIV Golf’s past as McIlroy has been. Furthermore, he always spoke in a polite and cheerful tone and did not hide his desire for his friend and teammate Sergio García to be on the Ryder Cup team despite his rejection of LIV. However, Rahm has always made it clear that he did not play golf for economic reasons and did not consider LIV’s 54-hole uncut format worthwhile.
“I’ve always been interested in history and legacy and now the PGA Tour has it,” Rahm said at the time. “There’s a meaning when you win the Memorial, for example. There’s a meaning when you win the Arnold Palmer event at Bay Hill. There’s a meaning when you win Los Angeles, Torrey Pines, and all these historical courses. That, to me , something important,” Jon added
The PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and the Saudi Fund of Public Investment signed a framework agreement in June where traditional circuits will receive financing from the Saudis in a new for-profit company. Details are elusive and a deadline of December 31 has been set to reach a more concrete agreement.
