Emma Hayes, Chelsea coach, warned of the danger of Madrid ahead of the Champions League debut at Alfredo di Stéfano this Wednesday (9:00 pm, DAZN). “This competition has been tough every year we’ve been here,” said Hayes, who is now named the new coach of the United States when this season ends.
“We don’t underestimate him and I’ve spoken before about our early years in the competition and how difficult it was for us to progress through the early rounds. We were eliminated in the group stage a few years ago,” the British coach recalled in the Valdebebas press room.
“No one in this locker room underestimates the quality of the rivals we are facing, particularly a team like Madrid who we tied with last year. We have to maintain the standards we have set for ourselves in this competition and we look forward to it.” Hayes warned, recalling that last year they lost in the semi-finals against Barcelona.
“They are a team that makes very quick transitions. In the forward areas they have players who can put you behind in one or two passes and they are very threatening, very patient in their defence. We have to be patient away from home. They are a team that is growing in importance across Europe,” Hayes warned.
