Netflix organized its own golf tournament this Tuesday on Las Vegas (USA), as a reason to promote its content and take advantage of the presence of Formula One in the city of the game to mix its drivers with golfers from PGA in an event where the streaming giant broadcasts a live sports show for the first time.
The ‘Netflix Cup’ was won by the couple formed by Carlos Sainz and Justin Thomaswho lost in the final Pierre Gasly and Tony Finau. They played a ‘scramble’ format with the ball hit best by the couple. The final is played on one hole and is won by whoever carries the ball closest from the tee to the flag, with two professionals marking the differences. So, a brilliant shot by Thomas put the ball in Sainz’s water.
Both lifted the trophy – later damaged by Sainz’s carelessness – to a full-fledged Sergio Ramos, and uncorked the champagne before donning the winners’ ‘checkered jackets’.
“I’d rather open the champagne on Saturday night, but we can do it today too”commented the smiling Spanish driver in relation to the Las Vegas Formula One Grand Prix, which will be held this weekend.
Netflix presents Wynn Golf Club, the only course on the Las Vegas Strip, a mix of both sports competing under golf rules but adding incentives for Formula One enthusiasts.
So, the first tee is visually mixed details of both sports: it has traffic lights and a path appears from it to travel with strollers to the green, marked by the famous ‘pianos’ of circuits.
The first hole awarded one point and also determined the winner in the event of a tie at the end of the match. They had to do it, literally, on the run, after the green light, and of course with Sainz and Norris at the wheel. And the event certainly is: a continued promotion of new features for this Netflix season, featuring the golf documentary series ‘Full Swing’ as well as the Formula One series ‘Drive to Survive’.
It was a two and a half hour live show, where, apart from the ‘promos’, the tour of the Wynn Golf Club held surprises reminiscent of the very popular Netflix titles like ‘The Squid Game’.
Also, the event was attended by artists and celebrities, such as basketball player Blake Griffin, DJ Steve Aoki and actor Mark Wahlberg. Patrick Mahomes also connected live from home, they interviewed McLaren owner Zak Brown, and they also had Collin Morikawa. This is a ‘different’ transmission, in the purest ‘Las Vegas style’, where wireless players carry a microphone in one hand and a cigar in the other.
