Switzerland forced Inka Grings to resign

Date:

The Swiss Football Federation (SFA) has announced the termination of the contract of the coach of the women’s team, the German Inca Grings, for sporting reasons, although it was assumed that these were also for non-sporting reasons after the recent corruption cases in which he was involved. Grings, 45, Germany’s second all-time leading scorer, led the way in January but failed to make an impact as Switzerland were eliminated from the Women’s World Cup in the round of 16.

Switzerland have also failed to win their last four matches, which included a 7-1 loss to world champions Spain last month. “I have decided to take this step with great regret to relieve pressure on the team and the association in light of current events,” the coach, who was ‘pushed’ to leave, said on Thursday. “It’s an exciting time for me, with a lot of great experiences as a national coach.”

The SFA has not named Grings’ successor. “The change of coaching position is also an opportunity to give new sporting impetus,” said SFA president Dominique Blanc. “We want to move into the future with our national team in the best possible position to continue to take advantage of the good atmosphere that prevails in women’s football in Switzerland.”

Switzerland next host Sweden on December 1 in the Women’s Nations League before visiting Italy on December 5. They are bottom of League A’s Group Four after losing four of their matches.
