Luis Enrique shows his face for Rubiales

The Spanish coach makes a fiery defense of the President of the Federation, after the audios that questioned his management

Luis Enrique closes the ranks with Luis Rubiales. The national coach assured that the situation facing the president of the Spanish Football Federation (FEF), cornered by the audio revealed by ‘El Confidencial’ that has raised suspicions about his management, is not having any kind of repercussion on La Roja, but he made a fiery defense of his boss at the press conference in which he explained the list for the national team’s first four pledges in the League of Nations.

“The Federation issue does not concern us at all. It is impossible to live away from the public beating inflicted on the president. Show him my confidence and that of my staff. I’m not basing this solely on the fact that I know the president and his actions. As a councilor that I am, I affirm that the Federation maintains the highest standards of transparency and that there is spectacular management,” claimed the Asturian, seeing strange elements in the persecution he believes Rubiales is subjected to. «There are interests that elude me and that I will not judge. Public caning is useless. We are going to work,” he added.

One of the taped conversations with the FEF president revealed that last year Gerard Piqué expressed his desire to participate in the Tokyo Olympics, despite retiring from the national team at the time, and wanted Rubiales would mediate on his behalf. Luis Enrique assured that he has never been pressured to make the Barca central defender wear the national jersey again. “If I’ve felt anything since I’ve been a coach, it’s respect for my position. Rubiales and Molina have been footballers and they know how far their skills go. Of course he didn’t close the doors. “Is Pique Spanish, does he want to come? I’m all ears,” he said.

Aside from the controversial questions about the FEF president and his dealings with Pique, the coach had yet to get through a thorny issue, such as the Champions League final that Real Madrid face Liverpool at the Stade de France on Saturday. Luis Enrique threatened to go the extra mile but eventually winked at the representative of Spanish football in the most anticipated game of the year at club level. “No answer I can give will be to everyone’s liking. I better keep my mouth shut. But if anyone deserves to win this Champions League, it’s Real Madrid,” he snapped.
