The Arrow McLaren IndyCar Formula 1 team announced Thursday that Mexican driver Patricio ‘Pato’ O’Ward will join its reserve group for the 2024 seasonand will debut in free practice 1 and the post-season test of the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
As reported by the factory in an official statement, his participation in the 2023 Grand Prix is part of the development within McLaren’s driver development program, where he will test his skills.
O’Ward, 24, started competing when she was just six years old and joined the British family in 2020.which participated in multiple MCL35M Driver Development tests and was taken to the 2021 Abu Dhabi Young Drivers test and the free practice of the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
“I am very excited to take on this new role within the McLaren Racing family.. “I always say that it’s never a bad day when you get into an F1 car, so I’m looking forward to joining the group of reserve drivers for next year, in addition to my obligations as an Arrow McLaren driver,” said of Mexicans.
Andrea Stella, team director, highlighted the driver’s excellent 2022-2023 season and said: “Pato had an amazing season in the NTT IndyCar Series and had good performance in its Driver Development tests, so it’s clear to take this next step.
“With such an extensive schedule, it is prudent to ensure that we have a deep reserve of drivers that we can call upon as needed. We look forward to seeing him thrive in this new role,” he concluded.
