Interview on Radio Euskadi with Nerea Melgosa

Date:

According to the Minister of Equality, Justice and Social Policy of the Basque Government, Nerea Melgosa, “The existing policy of equality and empowerment leads us to allow each of us to diagnose the situation that is close to our hearts.”

The increase in the number of calls to the telephone number of the specialized information and care service for female victims of sexist violence is, according to the Minister of Equality, Justice and Social Policy of the Basque Government, a response to Nerea Melgosa“to the awareness and empowerment campaigns of women” carried out by different sectors of the population.

Interviewed this Friday on Radio Euskadi on the eve of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, explained that “the existing policies of equality and empowerment lead us to ensure that each of us can diagnose the situation around us.” As an example, he gave the campaign of recent days in which videos were shown with real situations narrated by women on the SATEVI telephone line. “It is a hard campaign, conducted with the intention that women who have doubts about identifying themselves as victims of violence would put themselves in the place of other women and recognize themselves as victims.”

She emphasizes that more and more women are being encouraged to take the step and report their situation. “They feel increasingly supported by society,” in addition to the support of “many associations of female survivors who guide other women in their process.”

Asked about the difference in treatment between victims and perpetrators, referring to the Barakaldo case, where the female victim of violence is accompanied while the perpetrator is free, she emphasized, without going into this specific case, that it is an issue that is being worked on with both women and the courts, and options are being analyzed so that the burden of supervision tends to fall on the perpetrator and not the victim.

However, he emphasizes that “the most important thing is to protect the victim and make them feel safe, caring and protective, especially those who have taken the step to report the crime.”

She has emphasized the importance of all women knowing the SATEVI phone number (900 840 111), “where women will be cared for anonymously by amazing specialists and professionals.”
