In La Unión, the municipality where the Brazilian club’s plane crashed Chapecoensea Christmas figure referring to the tragedy was removed this Friday after provoking the rejection of residents for considering the entertainment of that episode that left 71 dead and shocked the world not enough.
As part of the Christmas lighting that will “decorate” the main park of this town in the department of Antioquia, several figures have been installed that evoke the “idiosyncrasy” of the area and historical facts, among them an airplane made of metallic paper rods and a shiny hose, which caused the collision that occurred in Cerro Gordo on the night of November 28, 2016.
After controversy and a barrage of criticism, La Unión’s Mayor’s Office announced in a statement the removal of that part of the light and apologized for the “inconvenience” it caused.
“Since the installation of the figure of the plane, referring to the event that took place on November 28, 2016, which marked the town, generated different reactions on social networks, the decision was made by the Mayor’s Office of La Unión to remove said figure from the main park,” said a statement signed by the municipality’s mayor, Édgar Alexander Osorio.
He added that “the intention of the Christmas decoration was never to offend the sensitivity of the community” and stated that “we understand and acknowledge the discomfort caused, therefore, we apologize and will proceed to remove the figure.”
In the statement they specified that for this edition they wanted to create a theme that also refers to the architecture of the area, its fauna and flora, in addition to “representing the history of the municipality”, where there are still traces of the tragedy . , especially in what is now called Cerro Chapecoense with crosses that remember the members of the Chapecó team and the crew of the LaMia Avro RJ85 plane that perished.
“I’m glad that they heard the voice of the people and a cry from a community that is not happy with this fact,” Rodrigo Botero, a resident of La Unión, told local media.
With the dismantling of the aircraft, the municipality will turn on the lights this Saturday to welcome the Christmas season and “decorate” the main park, where next Tuesday they will celebrate a Eucharist to commemorate the seven years of the plane crash that caused of football mourning. and marked forever the lives of the inhabitants of this town.
