Official: MotoGP withdraws concessions to help Honda and Yamaha

Date:

MotoGP announced this Monday, on the eve of the start of the 2024 pre-season test in Cheste, the introduction of a new system of concessions for manufacturers, with immediate effect, since the allocation of Test days for the 2024 season is starts this tuesday.

Before the Valencia GP, the Grand Prix Commission approved the withdrawal of concessions this time to ‘encourage’ that the Japanese manufacturers, who have lost ground in respect of the European manufacturers, can breathe to recover. The new system covers Test days, drivers, wildcard appearances, number of machines, engine and freeze details, aerodynamic updates and the number of tires provided for testing.

Factories will be classified into four groups – A, B, C or D – based on the percentage of the highest possible points they have accumulated in each window.

A manufacturer classified in rank A (Ducati) has to get at least 85% of the maximum possible points from the manufacturers, and then there will be 170 test tires, private tests with only test riders in three Grand Prix circuits, without ‘wildcards’ , a maximum of eight engines per year and a development freeze, as well as a single aerodynamic update per year.

A manufacturer classified in rank B the percentage of points must be less than 85% but more than 60%, while for C (KTM and Aprilia) it must be less than 60% and more than 35% . Factories in these categories will be subject to the same testing limits, number of engines, development freezes and aerodynamic updates as those in Category A, but can have three and six wildcards, respectively. They will also have 190 to 220 test tires.

For rank D (Yamaha and Honda), the percentage of points must be less than 35%. They will be able to have 260 test tires on any Grand Prix circuit, six ‘wildcards’, a maximum of 10 engines that can be freely developed and two aerodynamic updates per year. In addition, they can conduct tests with official drivers.

They pointed out that “the concessions will be calculated in two windows. The first is from the first test to the last season. The second is from the first Grand Prix after the summer test ban to the last Grand Prix before it begins. the ban on summer trial next season”. If a manufacturer changes the category in the second period, the concessions will be adjusted accordingly.
