The double Olympic champion of 800 meters Caster Semenya offered to show his penis to World Athletics officials when he was 18 to prove she was a woman, as revealed in an interview Tuesday with HBO RealSports.
Semenya, now 31, went into the limelight in 2009 after winning world 800m gold. That victory revealed a huge controversy about her gender. “I told her. I’m a woman, I don’t care what you say. If you want to check, I’ll show you my penis”he said in the documentary.
Gender tests that Semenya underwent as her case progressed showed that she had internal testicles that produce testosterone at levels three times higher than other women. South Africa has hyperandrogenism. That is, high testosterone levels favor increasing muscle mass, strength and the body’s ability to manage oxygen.
She had to take medication from the first World Athletics rule in 2011 that forced the women in her case to reduce testosterone levels to compete. “I got sick. I gained weight, I had panic attacks. I was afraid of having a heart attack. It’s like sticking a knife to me every day, but I have no choice, ”Semenya said.“ I’m 18 years old and I want to go to the Games yes or yes, ”he said.
The interview shows the differences between Semenya and Jonathan Taylor, lawyer for World Athletics. In 2020, the South African argued for his case before the TAS, but it did not agree with him.
