The Premier League has approved the sale of Chelsea

Date:

The Premier League on Tuesday approved Chelsea’s purchase of a consortium led by American billionaire Todd Boehly. Now the operation is pending the specific OK of the British government, although, as announced by the BBC, “major hurdles” have emerged.

As long as this final agreement does not take place, the British government could extend Chelsea’s special license, as it is now acting with restrictions due to penalties imposed on the club’s still owner, Roman Abramovich, after the invasion of Ukraine for his links to Vladimir Putin.

Chelsea currently operates with a special license that expires on May 31 and allows you to perform certain operations, such as receiving money for television rights and selling tickets for in some specific battles, but you will need a special extension to complete the purchase process for the part of Boehly, owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.

Boehley and his consortium passed the test

As the Premier League explained in a statement, Boehly and his consortium have passed the test of owners and presidents. Chelsea will continue to work with the country’s authorities to ensure the transaction is completed.

In addition to Boehly, investment firm Clearlake Capital, American millionaire Mark Walter, also a co-owner of the Dodgers, and Swiss tycoon Hansjörg Wyss are involved in the consortium.

Once the Government gives a go-ahead and the operation is completed, Chelsea will be able to function normally. This means that the club store will reopen, players will be able to buy, sell and renew, as well as sell tickets for all matches, whether they are Premier, FA Cup or Champions League.

Boehly’s group will pay approximately 4.25 billion pounds (4.97 billion euros) to take over Chelsea, which since 2003 has been in Abramovich’s hands. The Russian oligarch was forced to sell the club because of sanctions that burdened him when Russia began its invasion of Ukraine.

OK depends on Portugal

Meanwhile, the Portuguese government has now admitted that it is maintaining relations with London over the sale of Chelsea and warned that the operation would require Portugal’s permission because Abramovich has the nationality of this country.
