The French Antoine Rozner had a hot start to his title defense at Mauritius Open when signing 62 hits with 10 birdies and an eagle and a one-stroke lead after the first round of final event of the European tour 2023 this Thursday.
Rozner, number 128 in the rankings, started on the 10th hole, making five birdies and an eagle in his first nine holes, with 29 strokes, before making four birdies in the next five holes, leaving him to a 59. However, he bogeyed two of his last four holes in a final stretch that included the 10th birdie of his round, the lowest of his career on the European tour and a La Réserve Golf Links course record.
“It was unbelievable, I didn’t miss a shot, and I hit everything I needed to hit. It literally just all came together for me,” said Rozner, who won by five strokes in last year.
Paul Waring shot a bogey-free 63 and finished second, two strokes ahead of South African Jayden Schaper (65).
The best Spanish, in 16th place with several players, including South African Louis Oosthuizen, winner this Monday at Leopard Creek, is Santi Tarrio: 68 hits.
The Mauritius Open completes the series of tournaments in Africa before the European circuit takes a break over Christmas and continues in January with a series of events in the Middle East, starting with the Dubai Invitational on January 11.
