The Super League sees itself as a winner in the decision to be issued by the Court of Justice of the European Union against UEFA, which it accuses of a monopoly in the organization of European club competitions.
Bernd Reichart, CEO of the company A22 Sports behind the Super League, released a statement in which he announced that the resolution would be favorable but that UEFA “will stand no matter what.”
“As you already know, on December 21 the CJEU will issue its final antitrust decision against UEFA and FIFA,” began Reichart, Florentino Pérez’s right-hand man in his attempt to create a Super League and where only Real Madrid and the Barcelona.
“There is a lot of confusion on this issue. UEFA has an absolute monopoly on European club football. The Court will decide whether this monopoly is allowed to continue or, on the contrary, it should fall,” continued the CEO of A22.
“All domestic leagues are governed by the participating clubs. At the European level, however, the clubs have no say. We fully trust the court and the laws of the European Union that guide it,” Reichart said.
“After reading the decision and verifying that UEFA’s monopoly is illegal, we can finally make public the result of more than a year of talks with interested parties and we will propose an open European competition format for in more than 60 clubs. We will make sure that all clubs are treated equally and fairly,” continued the CEO, attacking UEFA at the end of his statement.
“UEFA, for its part, will declare that it has won no matter what. But do not be fooled, the fundamental freedoms are clear in EU law and apply to all its citizens and to football as well,” concluded Reichart.
