The smile returned to Newcastle United, who overcame their failure in Europe by breaking their bad three-game losing streak after defeating Fulham (3-0). Happiness could not be complete for Eddie Howe, who lost Schär and Joelinton to injury and almost had more players in the infirmary than out of it.
However, success is important. Fulham aren’t exactly a desirable rival to face after crashing out of the Champions League. Marco Silva’s team scored ten goals in the last two games but in this one they were conditioned by a stupid decision by Raúl Jiménez. The Mexican striker, hot after the previous action and recklessly entered Longstaff. Although he got his leg back, his hip collided with the Magpie midfielder’s face and through VAR he ended up being awarded a penalty.
There was almost a whole game ahead and Newcastle did fantastically to exploit their superiority in numbers. It also helped a Fulham who couldn’t finish closing down or giving up in attack. Although the first half ended goalless, with the crossbar keeping out one from Gordon, and with injuries to Schär and Joelinton, Eddie Howe’s men came out with the same attitude after the break.
This is why the wait was not long. It was Miley, after a great play by Bruno Guimaraes who cut inside lines, who beat Leno across the field at 17 years old (57′). Once Newcastle were freed, they put the direct foot on a Fulham who increasingly tried to bail out, but still ended up in overdrive. Almirón (64′) and Burn (82′), who came back and received a magnificent assist from Guimaraes from outside, sealed a match that could have ended in defeat if the post and Leno had not stopped it.
