The American Frances Tiafoe was the only seed to advance to the tournament in Hong Kong which left out the Dutch Botic Van de Zandschulp, the Russian Karen Khachanov, second favorite, and the Italian Lorenzo Musetti, sixth.
However, Tiafoe took his rivalry with Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, whom he defeated 6-3 and 7-6(4) in one hour and 34 minutes. The third favorite will play in the quarterfinals with Chinese Juncheng Shang, who has been one of the sensations of the event.
The young local player defeated Dutch Botic Van de Zandschulp by 6-7(5), 7-6(6) and 7-6(2) in a dramatic clash that lasted more than three and a half hours.
The eight best also includes the Russian Pavel Kotov who did not give a chance to a faded Lorenzo Musetti which he defeated 6-4 and 6-3 to meet the Finnish Emil Ruusuvuori, the protagonist of another of the surprises of the day by eliminating the Russian Karen Khachanov, second favorite, by 7-6(2), 2-6, and 6 -2.
