Hodgson reflects on the pressure on former players who are now coaches

The technician of Crystal palace, Roy Hodgsonsaid he trusted that Wayne Rooney will be in the running for future managerial roles after the former England international was sacked by Birmingham City on Tuesday. Rooney was appointed manager of Birmingham in October when the club finished sixth in the second division Championship, but was sacked this week after they won just two of his 15 games in charge and fell to 20th place, six points above the relegation zone.

“He has an exceptional football brain and was a magnificent footballer,” Hodgson, who coached Rooney during his tenure as England manager, told reporters on Wednesday before Palace’s FA Cup match against Everton on Thursday. “I’m sad about what happened, but I know he’ll be fine. I read that he’s going to take a break from the game and it seems like a smart decision.”

“There’s no doubt that Wayne Rooney is always on people’s lips and minds when it comes to future jobs. He really understands football. He shows that as a player – he’s very thoughtful and tactically astute.”

Hodgson extended Rooney’s reflections on former players who have had problems in managerial positions over the years and said they were all often judged harshly after being appointed to key positions.

“They are welcomed into a club by name and is expected to suddenly take over a team that has not done very well and blow it up. That’s an unrealistic demand. They all have to say they really didn’t have a good time. . No one gives them two or three transfer windows, no one gives them a chance.”
