Repsol will provide new renewable fuel to the team Toyota Gazoo Racing during the Dakar 2024, which will be held from January 5 to 19 in Saudi Arabia, as announced by the Spanish multi-energy company through a statement.
In particular, the company will make more than 10,000 liters available to the official Toyota team so that two of the team’s cars can perform the most demanding rally on the planet with a new fuel that will contain 70% of the part of the renewable source, approved by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) since November.
The pilots who will use this renewable fuel are the Brazilian ones Lucas Moraeswho finished third in the 2023 Dakar, and the American Seth Quintero one of the young promises with the most projections in the future of the competition.
This collaboration is the result of joint work between Repsol and Toyota in various tests and competitions to develop Repsol’s renewable fuel for high competition. This new fuel was designed and produced in the Repsol Technology Lab, the company’s innovation center, from organic waste, such as sustainable residues from the wine industry. It is produced in facilities certified under the ISCC EU sustainability scheme, recognized by European institutions to demonstrate compliance with the sustainability and carbon footprint reduction standards of renewable fuels included in the Renewable Energy Directive.
High competition is always the best test bed for Repsol to test its products in the most demanding conditions. Repsol starts using renewable fuels at the Dakar in 2022 with Isidre Esteve, a supply that is still valid today. Starting the same year, the company also supplied 100% renewable fuels to the French Formula 4 championship, the first single-seater competition in the world to use these new fuels. In 2024, MotoGP teams, including Repsol Honda, will also start using 40% renewable fuel.
Repsol has a long history of producing renewable fuels for both competition and transportation, allowing users to maintain the high performance of conventional fuels while reducing emissions.
Soon, Repsol will launch in Cartagena (Murcia Region) the first plant in the Iberian Peninsula dedicated exclusively to the production of advanced biofuels from organic waste, mainly used cooking oil and waste from the agri industry -food. It will have an annual production capacity of 250,000 tons of renewable fuel, the amount needed to travel 141,000 times around the world by car and which will lead to a reduction of 900,000 tons of CO2 per year in the mobility sector.
Experience in high competition allows Repsol to offer quality products to its end customers. Throughout 2023, Repsol has started supplying 100% renewable fuel to its service stations in Spain and Portugal, which has already exceeded 50 stations where customers can choose to refuel with renewable fuel that has been tested in extreme conditions, such as circuit circuits and the desert during the Dakar.
