Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Emirates), winner of the 2023 Tour del Porvenir, entered the professional field at the age of 20 by winning the sprint in the second stage of the Santos Tour Down Under, which allowed him to be the leader in the test that inaugurates the World Tour circuit.
Del Toro, in an exciting last kilometer, managed to overtake the sprinters to win in a time of 3h.29.37, at an average of 40.5 km/hour, ahead of two runners from Israel Premier Tech, the New Zealander who Corbin Strong and the British Stephen Williams, leaving fourth place for Eritrean Biniam Girmai (Intermarché) and fifth for Australian Caleb Ewan (Jayco).
A special and significant victory for one of the great hopes of world cycling, who left his stamp of quality at the Tour del Porvenir, which convinced the UAE to sign him.
The victory gave him the orange jersey that identifies the leader in the Australian event, which he will defend in the third stage with a 2-second advantage over Strong and 7 over Girmay. The first Spaniard in the general classification is Rubén Fernández (Cofidis), eighteenth in 11 seconds.
“I don’t even know what to say, it’s too much for me. I dreamed of winning a stage and I’ve been here for a while, in Adelaide, always trying to do my best, but winning is unbelievable,” said the Mexican at the finish line.
Del Toro experienced endless finishes on the stage, but he was finally able to raise his arms in front of the sprint specialists.
“The team did a great job, everyone supported me a lot. Honestly, the last kilometer was like five and I just tried to finish it and enjoy it. The last climb was crazy, but there was I have a chance there. The race was a success for me, everything that follows is a plus,” he said.
Del Toro took advantage of the final raise to launch the winning bet, which led him to conquer a dream.
This Thursday, the third stage will take place between Tea Tree Gully and Campbelltown, with an undulating route of 145.3 km.
