Villas-Boas announced his candidacy for the presidency of Porto

Date:

The Portuguese coach André Villas-Boas now presented his candidacy for the presidency of FC Porto and will challenge Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, In office since 1982 and at 86 years old, one of the most influential men in Portuguese football.

“I am a candidate for the presidency of FC Porto,” launched Villas-Boas, at 46 years old, on the occasion of presenting his candidacy for the election likely to take place next April.

He directed one season at Porto

Without a team since he left Olympique de Marseille in February 2021, Villas-Boas is a former disciple of José Mourinho and has only managed Porto, his hometown club, in one season, 2010-2011, when he won the League, Cup, Super Cup and Europa League.

After being Mourinho’s assistant at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, Villas-Boas began his career as a solo coach at Acadómica Coimbra (2009-2010). After his career at Porto ended, he had spells at Chelsea (2011-2012) and Tottenham (2012-2013) before winning the Russian League and Super Cup in 2015 and the Cup in 2016 with Zenit Saint Petersburg (2014-2016).

Before joining Marseille in 2019, he spent a year in China, at Shanghai SIPG (2016-2017).

Commotion in Porto

His ambition to lead FC Porto, which he has already publicly announced, has caused chaos at the club and in their ultras, loyal to Pinto da Costa.

In November, Villas-Boas reported “acts of intimidation, vandalism and violence” against one of his colleagues as well as at his residence in Porto.

After several years under the threat of sanctions from UEFA for violating the rules of financial fair play, FC Porto is still fighting to get its accounts back sustainably because it recorded losses of 40.7 million euros during the 2022/2023 season.
