Klopp: “We are not bringing Salah to Liverpool to get him out of Egypt”

Date:

Mohamed Salah will return to African Cup of Nations (AFCON) if he recovers from an injury in time and Egypt reaches the final, the coach of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp. The 31-year-old winger returned to England for treatment after suffering a hamstring injury in Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana last week.

Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders said Salah is expected to return to action in three or four weeks if there are no setbacks in his recovery. The AFCON final is on February 2. “Egypt and Liverpool have the same interest, we want Mo Salah to be ready as soon as possible,” Klopp told beIN SPORTS after his side reached the League Cup final via of the defeat to Fulham on Wednesday. “If he stays in Africa and they don’t give him proper treatment, it will delay everything, especially in Egypt if they go through the tournament.

“We brought him here not because we want to get him out of Egypt but just to offer him the best medical treatment. Everything was agreed. If Salah is fit and Egypt goes to the final, it was always clear that he will return to 100 %. Mo wants it, we want it”.

Egypt, a record seven-time champions, finished second in Group B with three points after three consecutive 2-2 draws. On Sunday they play against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the round of 16. Klopp also defended Salah’s decision to return to Merseyside for treatment, with some experts and former players saying that as captain he should have stayed on his team. “If anyone questions Mo Salah’s honesty, they should ask themselves if his honesty is correct, because Mo Salah is the most honest Egyptian I have ever met in my life,” he said.
