An apartment fire in Salzburg-Lehen ended lightly on Thursday evening. The resident acted with good judgment and emergency services were even able to save his lifeless cat.
A man in Salzburg-Liefering woke up on Thursday night to heavy smoke already spreading through his apartment. The 38-year-old was able to get from his burning apartment to the stairs of the apartment building. He sounded the alarm for a neighbor. He immediately called the emergency services.
Other residents did not have to leave the home
Shortly afterwards, the Salzburg fire brigade extinguished the flames. Because the resident had closed the door of the apartment behind him, no smoke had entered the stairwell. This meant that the other residents did not have to be woken up and evacuated.
Rescuers gave the cat oxygen
The emergency services managed to save the resident’s cat during the operation. “We found out the cat was still in the apartment. We found her on the couch. She was probably surprised by the fire there,” the fire brigade said. When she was found, the cat was already lifeless. However, Red Cross rescuers managed to revive the injured animal with the help of oxygen.
The Salzburg City Police Command is now investigating the cause of the fire. The 38-year-old man came to the University Hospital of Salzburg with suspected smoke poisoning, but was able to leave the clinic that night.
