Window lost – After checks: Boeing 737-MAX-9 is allowed to fly again

Date:

The Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft, which were shut down after a terrifying incident, will soon be allowed to fly again. The American aviation authority FAA approved the procedure for the inspections of the machines it ordered on Wednesday evening (local time).

Such a test takes more than ten hours by plane. Alaska Airlines now plans to add the first inspected aircraft to its flight schedule on Friday, while United Airlines plans to put its 737 MAX 9 jets into service on Sunday.

Cabin part broke apart while climbing
On January 5, shortly after takeoff, part of the fuselage of an almost new Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 with more than 170 people on board broke away. Instead, some multi-seat configurations have a door.

170 aircraft on the ground for investigation
However, the affected variant of the 737 MAX 9 has a lid that closes the opening. The FAA and other authorities ordered all approximately 170 similar aircraft of this type to be grounded for investigation. No one was seriously injured in the incident, but by a fortunate coincidence the two seats immediately at the opening remained empty.

The FAA has now specifically ordered fasteners to be inspected and tightened if necessary. Alaska and United had also discovered loose mounting parts on other aircraft of this type at that time. EU airlines do not have aircraft of the model in question.

FAA: “Unacceptable” quality control issues
The incident now has greater consequences for Boeing. The FAA announced that it would not allow any further expansion of production of all models of the 737 MAX 9 for the time being. Boeing’s quality control problems are “unacceptable,” authority boss Mike Whitaker insists. Now the FAA wants to take a closer look at the production of the 737 MAX 9.

The expansion stop is a problem for Boeing: the American aircraft manufacturer can only slowly reduce the many 737 MAX orders and is therefore falling behind its European rival Airbus. Boeing currently builds about 30 MAX family aircraft per month. Next year, monthly production should be increased to 50 machines.
