Chicho Lorenzofather of Jorge Lorenzowent through the journalist’s YouTube channel Nico Abad. The driver coach, in a wide-ranging interview, told countless anecdotes with ’99’ as the protagonist.
One of the most difficult, however, was defined in the months before Jorge Lorenzo will debut in world: “We are in training IRTA (International Road-Racing Teams Association) in Montmelo and, at that time, he was 14 years old. I was about to go up to the world championship. I ran with the Derby 125cc and there was one last lap left to finish the day’s practice.
“I could see that they were stopping everything, the pilots started to come in and an ambulance came out onto the track. I started to see if my son was coming, but he wasn’t. I said: ‘That’s it, he fell and hurt himself. ‘ “The ambulance entered the runway with auxiliary runways… not normal. I got nervous. They confirmed that he had fallen, so I went to the infirmary,” he continued. Chicho.
“The ambulance arrived after an eternity. They opened the doors and he was convulsing. He was broken his wrist, his collarbone… he had an impressive trip,” added the father of Jorge Lorenzo.
“The accident was not his fault, it was due to some plastic on the rail. It was from his motorcycle. Lucio Cecchinello, which also fell. It’s three, a very long curve where it’s very fast,” he lamented as he spoke.
“At that moment he was unconscious and they started to cut off his overalls. I keep it as a memory because it was one of the worst moments of my life,” he explained.
“He started to have a conscience and the first thing I said to him was: ‘Giorgio‘Let’s stop this nonsense.’ And he, in the pain he must go through, gritted his teeth and told me no. He couldn’t even speak and shook his head in denial. He didn’t shed a tear.” The rest is history.
