The medals for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games will carry a piece of the original 1889 Eiffel Toweras announced this Thursday by the organizers.
On the front of the medals is a steel hexagon taken from the Eiffel Tower and with the Paris-2024 logo. The rays emanating from the hexagon are molded into the metal of the medal.
In contrast, the carved figures of the goddess of victory Athena Nike, the Panathenaic Stadium and the Acropolis These are imposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), but Paris 2024 has obtained exceptional permission to add the design of the Eiffel Tower.
The discipline for which the medal was awarded is written on its side.
In the case of Paralympic medals, there is no mandatory figure on the reverse. So it will be a bird’s eye view under the Eiffel Tower, with the inscription Paris 2024 in universal braille.
The 18 grams of the Eiffel Tower embedded in each medal were obtained from the Iron Lady pieces during the renovation of the monument and kept secretly in sheds in the suburbs of Paris.
Chaumet, a jeweler owned by LVMH and a premium partner of Paris 2024, has been chosen to design the medals, which will be produced by the Paris Mint.
Each medal will be 85mm wide and 9.2mm thickwith different weights: 529 g for gold, 525 g for silver and 455 g for copper.
The weight, size, shape, representations on the obverse of the medals and the ban on piercing the object are imposed by the IOC.
