Paul defeated his compatriot Ben Sheltonseeded 3, by 6-2 and 6-4, while Giron once again defeated a seed, the Frenchman Adrian Mannarinoseeded 4, 6-1 and 6-3 in the semifinals.
Giron, 30, who defeated Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals, seeks her first ATP Tour title on Sunday in her second trip to a final.
Paul’s only title came in 2021 in Stockholm. Paul won the last four games of the first set before breaking early in the second set against the 21-year-old Shelton at the hardcourt event on SMU’s campus.
Giron led 4-0 in the first set a day after winning 5-0 in two sets against Tiafoe, who is the highest ranked in the tournament at number 14.
The first break of the second set came when Giron saved the set with a forehandand then ran into Mannarino’s volley for a crosscourt backhand passing shot and a 5-3 lead.
Giron, who hasn’t lost a service game in four matches in the tournament, had no problem closing out the match on her serve. With three wins against seeds, Giron has a chance to surpass his career-best 49th place finish from 2022, when he lost the only previous final in San Diego.
Giron reached the semifinals in Dallas two years ago, losing a three-set match against Jenson Brooksby when he held match points. The last two sets were broken.
