He Spanish Short Track Championship that will take place this weekend in Ourense will be the scene of an unprecedented situation: a mother and her son will compete for the national title in the same event.
It was in the women’s 1500m, where Alejandra Galvez he will measure himself against his daughter Daniela Sierra on the Expourense covered track, south of the Galician city. This is the first time in the 60 editions of the Championship that a rivalry of this nature will take place.
The mother and son are, at the same time, the oldest and youngest athletes in the Championship, along with 46 and 15 years respectively. Both from Almería and defend the colors of Trops Caves of Nerjabut their paths are very different.
Alejandra, the mother, is a doctor at the Torrecárdenas University Hospital and has extensive experience as a middle distance runner. His first participation in the Spanish Championship was 30 years ago in Seville, and since then he has achieved many successes in the full and masters events, where he has accumulated national golds in the 400m, 800m and 1500m. Furthermore, it holds the 800m world record in the F45 category with a mark of 2:12.99 achieved in Antequera.
His daughter Daniela, 31 years younger, is U16 national runner-up in the 1000ma distance for which he also holds the Andalusian record in his age group (2:58.08).
There is no rivalry between them, but there is a certain “pique,” as the young woman said in an interview with journalist Marina Rivas in Diario Sur. “Right now we are at the same level. I love competing with her and of course there is a bit of rivalry in each series, but I see more, because you have the motivation to train,” he says.
This is not the first time they have measured each other on an athletics track. They have done it in 1500m of Full Andalusian Championship, where they shared the podium (second and third) and qualified for the national championship in Ourense. They would arrive there with similar distance marks: 4:37.20 for Daniela and 4:37.34 for her mother.
The women’s 1500m event will be held on Saturday (semifinal) and Sunday (final) and will be attended by Esther Guerrero and Martha Perezthe great dominators of the Spanish middle distance in recent years.
