Iran and Israel continued their mutual attacks for the third day in a row on Sunday. The conflict between the two countries have been smoldering for decades – ideological, politics and military. Experts now warn of a surface fire in the middle east. This does not leave European governments cold either.
“The region has never been as close to an adult surface as now,” said Ali Vaez, head of the Iran department of the Thinktank International Crisis Group. It is unclear how many weapons and defense systems the Israelis would have destroyed, but the Iranian side still has an attack potential. This not only has extensive marching aircraft, but also strong allies in the region such as the Houthi militia in Yemen, the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas and the Hisbollah in Lebanon.
“If this continues, it can quickly become very ugly,” said Vaez. This kind of warnings also do not stop at Europe. EU outside country representative Kaja Kallas raised a video conference of EU Minister of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday. The diplomatic relations with Israel and Iran must be coordinated and possibly further steps must be discussed.
Warn the app and shelter in Cyprus
The EU country, closest to the war zone, is 250 kilometers away from Israel. There, the government has now put a warning app into use to inform citizens about the nearest protective bunker if necessary. There are more than 2200 on the island.
Cypriot media reported that citizens could observe the Iranian attacks and activity of the Israeli missile weather system in the distance at night. Strict safety measures have been taken since Friday around the civil airports of Larnaka and Paphos. The authorities are delivered, among other things, because Great -Britain has two sovereign bases in Cyprus that can become goals for attacks.
More checks and police in Italy
The Italian government has also tightened the security measures since the escalation. There are feared attacks by radical Islamists. That is why the Israeli and Iranian embassy in Rome was strictly instructed.
