Lindsey Horan apologizes for insulting American fans

Date:

The captain of the women’s national team USA, Lindsey Horan, apologized hours ago for recent comments in which he said he was “not smart” and “didn’t know the game.” In a conference call with reporters ahead of the first CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup, Horan said her comments were “poorly worded.”

The United States opens Gold Cup competition Tuesday in Carson, California, against an as-yet-undetermined opponent. Horan was quoted in a recent interview by ‘The Athletic’ where he said that “American football fans, most of them are not smart, they don’t know the game, they don’t understand it, even though it’s getting better and better good.” His comments were rooted in frustration with how some viewers take television commentary at face value. Horan, who plays professionally in France (Lyon), said he thought about the comments and the reaction to them. “Some of my comments were poorly worded and I learned a big lesson,” he said.

In addition to apologizing, Horan emphasized the appreciation he and the rest of the team have for the fans. “We go out and practice, every time we go out and play we do it for you and you are our inspiration, our motivation and to see you wear our jerseys and shout our names and shout ‘USA’, that “The soccer culture in the United States is changing and growing significantly in a very positive way.”

The United States came under fire after being eliminated in the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup last summer. This was the team’s first ever elimination from a World Cup.
