The Belgian Remco Evenepoehe, of Soudal-Quick Stepwas fastest Saturday in the time trial of the fourth stage of the Vuelta al Algarve and snatched the yellow jersey from Colombian Daniel Martínez, who is now second overall by 48 seconds.
Evenepoel covered the 22 kilometer circuit in the resort town of Albufeira in 27 minutes and 9 seconds, while Martínez (BORA-hansgrohe) recorded the eighth fastest time (28 minutes), not enough to maintain the race lead of Portuguese.
The American Magnus Sheffield (INEOS Grenadiers) and the Swiss Stefan Küng (Groupama) completed the podium, with 27:25 and 27:38, respectively.
In the fourth and penultimate stage of the 50th Tour of the Algarve, the Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) also had an amazing performance, with 27:46.
Martínez’s compatriot and teammate Sergio Higuita finished in 52nd place, closely followed by Spaniard Mikel Landa, from the same team as Evenepoel, in 54th.
With one stage remaining, the Vuelta al Algarve is now led by Remco Evenepoel, followed by Martínez (48 seconds away), while Slovenian rider Jan Tratnik, from Team Visma-Lease a Bike and finished in th -tenth in the time trial, is He. was third (in 1:12).
For their part, Higuita and Landa fell to 19th and 21st place, 2:27 and 2:35 behind the leader, respectively.
“Algarvia”, as the test is known, will end this Sunday with a 165.8 kilometer stage between Faro, the main city of the southern Portuguese region, and Alto del Malhão, in Loulé, the traditional finish of this competition.
