English Michael Oliver is set to lead the Spain-Portugal match, on the first day of the League of Nations, which will be played on Thursday at the Benito Villamarín stadium in Seville.

Oliver, 37, will be assisted by his compatriots Stuart Burt and Simon Bennett, and the fourth officer will be Andrew Madley.

The English referee, who this year led Spanish teams in continental competitions such as Barcelona, ​​Sevilla or Betis and has been an international since 2012, led the national team in March 2017 in a qualifying World Cup match in Gijón against Israel (4-1), and against Switzerland in the quarterfinals of the last European Championship, on July 2, 2021 in Saint Petersburg, where the Red team passed penalties after ending the match with 1-1 draw.

He also led Portugal in November 2020, in a Nations League match in Croatia, where the ‘quinas’ won 2-3 with a late goal from Ruben Dias.

Their last game was Manchester City’s victory against Aston Villa (3-2) which gave the Premier League to Pep Guardiola’s team.

Spain and Portugal will debut the third edition of the League of Nations starting at 8:45 pm in a group A2 match, completed by the Czech Republic and Switzerland, which will face off at Sinobo Stadium in Prague at the same time.

The Portuguese were the champions of the first edition, beating the Netherlands in the final by 1-0, and Spain were runner-up in the second, losing to France 2-1.
