Two -time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray said Monday that the decision to remove British Grand Slam points from its ranking was not a “big step” by ATP and WTA Tours. Wimbledon was stripped of ranking points after it decided to exclude players from Russia and Belarus due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow called a ‘special operation’.
“Taking away points, if it doesn’t prevent players from playing, I don’t think it’s a big move away from ATP.”Murray told reporters after advancing to the second round of the Surbiton grass challenger. “They have already taken away points, all the players are still signed up. I think Wimbledon will continue and there will be a very strong turnout“Murray pointed out.
Banning Russian and Belarusian players from Wimbledon this year is the only available option under the guidance provided by the British government, organizers of the All England Lawn Tennis Club said last month in announcing the decision .
“I don’t think anyone in the ATP supports what’s happening in Ukraine,” said Murray. “I think they’re trying to protect the players as best they can and that’s the decision they made. Some players agree with the decision, but I think most don’t,” he added. “I talked to some of the Russian players in Madrid and I also feel sorry for them. I like them and I am their friend and I think they are also not in favor of what is happening (in Ukraine),” he closed.
Murray said last week that Wimbledon would never feel like an “exhibition event”.
