Cologne – deeply involved in the relegation fight – snapped Stuttgart’s four-game winning streak on Saturday, third in the Bundesliga, by drawing at home (1-1) at the MHP Arena.
Stuttgart had more of the ball, came more and had chances to define the game but they lacked consistency and there were periods where Cologne managed to put the ball in the opposite half.
Balance in the first half
Colonia had the first chance of the game in the 3rd minute, at the foot of Jan Thielmann, but then Stuttgart took control of the game and for a good part of the first half they were putting the pressure on the place although not managing to take the lead.
Stuttgart’s best chance in the first 45 minutes was a header from Serhou Guirassy who partially passed the course.
The goals, in the second half
The goal has to wait for the second half and is marked by Enzo Millot from close range to Christian Führich’s cross after the latter’s combination with Hiroki Ito on the left wing.
Colonia secured the tie in the 62nd minute Eric Martel who received the ball on the edge of the small area after a cross from Linton Maina got past the entire Stuttgart defense and finished unchallenged.
Domain but not ending
The tone of the match after the tying goal was marked by Stuttgart dominance and initiativewith many situations in place, but Colonia also has options in counterattack plays.
Colonia had the best chance Faride Alidou in the 85th minute after a mistake by Ito, who lost the ball in midfield, the Colonia player was left with an open highway to reach the area but failed in the sense.
Golden point for Cologne
The point is important for Cologne, second from last and in a playoff spot, in the fight against relegation as it distances itself by two from Mainz, which on Friday lost its visit to leaders Bayer Leverkusen (2-1 ).
Meanwhile, Stuttgart’s situation, third, in terms of qualifying for the Champions League is relatively comfortable, although Leipzig, fifth, will move closer to four points if they beat Bayern in Munich this afternoon.
