Esther Guerrero “excited” to face the Glasgow Indoor World Championships. Her goal is to reach the final of the 1,500 meters as the first step of a season she wants to end at the Paris Olympic Games, after going through the European Championships in Rome, where she hopes to compete. a medal, he said in an interview with EFE.
Guerrero (Bañolas, Girona; 1990), at the age of 34, is in a good moment of form. She is one of the banners of the Spanish women’s middle distance and, together with Marta Pérez from Soriano, maintains a healthy rivalry that translates to the courts and brings them friendship. This season, he arrives in Glasgow supported by the Spanish record for a thousand meters on an indoor track which he reached in Malaga with 2:37.57 on January 13.
Q: How do you get to Glasgow?
A: Very good, very happy. I’m excited because it’s a championship that seems to have eluded me. I’ve been to many championships but not a world indoor championship in the 1,500. I wanted to be in Belgrade 2022 but then I was injured. It is an attractive championship, it is three days, there are few participants, we have a chance to enter a final and I think it can be done. My body is fine and I’m looking forward to it.
Q: What is your rivalry with Marta Pérez?
A: In the end, sharing many years with him was a pleasure. I am more beautiful because of my competitiveness with her and I hope she has grown with me too. He is my essential rival and it is true that in international championships we look for the same thing but it is an important support to know that he is by my side. He is very similar to me, he has achieved international things better than me and for me it is a challenge and the competition motivates me.
Q: How do you rate your indoor track season?
A: Indoor track seasons are so short, you never know. I started better than I expected with the Spanish record of one thousand meters. Then I competed in Sabadell, my home rally, and played two bullets to try to improve my personal record. The first one in Boston was strange because it was a slow race, in a group, the Ethiopians left and we were left behind, and in Lievin I didn’t feel good because I was a bit tired. I think I did things well but I want to go to a rally in 2:40 or 2:41 and see what happens.
Q: This year is special because of all the competitions they have. How much is left in your head for Games?
A: I think there are very few left. In the end, each season is a different path but when the Games are held, not only because of our importance, but because of that of others, everything overflows. There is media attention that we are not used to. The fact of having so many influences around us creates a pressure that we don’t have in other championships.
Q: Is the European Championship in Rome a distraction a month and a half before the Games?
A: For me, no. Being realistic, this is what motivates me to be there and fight for a medal. It was my choice and at the point where I was at the Olympic Games it was very difficult, if not impossible. It was a challenge to land in Rome. I am lucky to have minimum and well placed through ranking and that will make me face the preparation better. I am an athlete who has been running outdoor rallies for months and I think this is a card in my favor.
Q: What will you do after Glasgow?
A: I’m not going on vacation. For two weeks, since the Spanish Championships, I lowered the load and increased the intensity. I need three days of rest, to avoid hitting the ground, but then I will go to Font Romeu for a month to train at altitude. The job is done. In the winter, we did more extensive work to do this. Planning today is not how you cut it, but how you’ve been working on it ever since, and I think we’ve done it pretty well.
