The fourth is resistance

Date:

Yesterday Real Sociedad bid farewell to the possibility of winning their fourth Copa del Rey after losing in Anoeta against Mallorca. This is the eleventh Cup semi-final that the San Sebastian club has lost in its entire history, out of the seventeen it has played. These are Real’s other losses in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey:

La Real reached the semi-finals of the Cup for the second time in 1923 (after winning the competition in 1909), where they fell to Athletic Club in San Mamés 2-0, having drawn the first leg 0-0. La Real lost the second semi-final in 1941 against Espanyol. A crushing 6-0 defeat in the first leg left the Txuri Urdin team with almost no chance of returning to Atocha. Seven years later, the San Sebastian team crashed again after losing in the semi-finals of the Cup, this time 7-1 in the first leg against Sevilla. La Real won the second leg 1-0, but a comeback is almost impossible after such a lopsided first result. After defeating Real Madrid in the semifinals of 1951, Real got another chance six years later, in 1957 against FC Barcelona. Both games ended with the same result: 5-1 in favor of the Catalans. The following season, Real again reached the semi-finals of the Cup, but this time they fell to Real Madrid: 4-1 at the Bernabéu and 1-1 at Atocha. In 1965, Real lost again in the semifinals against another Madrid team, Atlético de Madrid: an 8-1 in the first leg dashed the San Sebastian team’s hopes of reaching the final.

It took eleven years for Real to reach the semi-finals of the Cup again (1976), and they lost to the same rivals. Although Real secured a draw in the second leg at the Calderón, a 0-1 draw in the first leg meant the Basque team fell to Atlético again. Two years later, Real reached the semi-finals again, this time against Barcelona. In the first leg the result was 0-0, but in the second leg the Blaugranas won, 2-1. Four years later, in the 1981-1982 season, League champions Real found themselves in the semifinals against Real Madrid. They lost on penalties by 3 goals out of 4 after the aggregate 1-1. The tenth ‘semi’ defeat occurred the following season: Real lost again in the semi-finals against FC Barcelona, And, yesterday, the eleventh defeat in the Copa del Rey semifinals in the history of Real Sociedad ended against a Mallorca that stopped everything, took the penalties and caused a surprise in Anoeta.
