Kipruto won the Tokyo Marathon and Kipchoge did not go beyond tenth place

The Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge suffered a setback in its preparations to try to win a third straight Olympic gold medal this year at the Paris Games after this Sunday at tenth place in the Tokyo Marathonwon by his countryman Benson Kipruto.

Kipchoge39 years old, scored a 2:06:50. Cyprus was imposed on 2:02:16, trial record and also ahead of Kenyan Timothy Kiplagat (2:02:55) and Vincent Ngetich (2:04:18).

The Ethiopian Sutume Asefa Kebede completed the women’s course at 2:15:55 to declare himself the winner. She was ahead of Kenyan Rosemary Wanjiru (2:16:14) and world champion Amane Beriso Shankule (2:16:58).

The race started after the world record holder Kelvin Kiptum died in an accident on his way to Kenya. Kiptum, 24, recently broke the world record set by Kipchoge, with a time of 2h 0min 35sec at the Chicago Marathon.

The Tokyo marathon was Kipchoge’s first race after Kiptum’s death, in his quest to regain the world record for the distance. There was nothing he could do this time Kiplagat, Kipruto and Ngetich speed setting.

The former world record holder suffered, with increasing difficulties as the test progressed. So, he cannot fight for victory, decided around kilometer 30. That’s when Kipruto passed through Kiplagat to aim and establish a new personal best.
