The Olympic Games moderns have always had a very close relationship with the image which, together with photographs, films and television broadcasts, can be seen in official posters of each edition.
From Stockholm 1912, each of the Games designed an official poster to promote and advertise the competitions. Now the turn has come Paris 2024which unveiled its iconic posters yesterday at the Orsay Museum.
These are two independent posters, one for the Olympic Games and the other for the Paralympic Games, which when placed side by side form a diptych which tells the full story of Paris 2024.
“First, we want to tell a strong story for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, as we did with our emblem and our mascot,” he said. Tony Estanguetpresident of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee. “It features key symbols of Paris 2024, along with many references to the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games,” he added.
The pieces, designed by the French illustrator Ugo Gattonipresent an amazing, colorful and fun universe, rich in details and micro-stories, where you can see the main symbols of the city such as the Eiffel Tower, Stade de France, Seine River and sports in the capital.
“When I was asked to design the iconic posters for Paris 2024, I immediately thought of a city-stadium open to the world, a suspended time where you can walk around in a microcosm where the monuments of Paris and sporting disciplines are happy together. For me, this design should be timeless,” said Gattoni.
Some of those things that can be seen on the posters are the Olympic rings, the three ‘Agitos’, the mascots, the arrival of the Olympic torch, the mass running event, the boats from the opening ceremony on the Seine and the competition areas, as well as The monuments emblematic of the city of Paris and many gameespecially the new ones like breaking dance, climbing, skateboarding and surfing.
“It is based on the golden ratio and has a solid academic base with a lot of architecture. Its originality lies in its surreal and utopian aspect, both in its composition and in the thousands of details that characterize it, ” added the artist.
The posters are sold in the official Paris 2024 stores, in the Orsay Museum store and in the online store with a starting price of €20. In the second phase, they will be available for purchase in FNAC stores and supermarkets.
Games posters, more than 100 years of history
The first official poster for the Olympic Games was created to Stockholm 1912 and it was part of an art competition. Since then, the Organizing Committee has been in charge of creating an official poster for each edition of the Games.
In the first half of the 20th century, posters were there primary function of advertising the games. Radio was not used as a means of communication until the 1928 Amsterdam Games, and the first television broadcast came in Berlin 1936.
Because of this, the first posters were important to promote the competitions and had to provide the public with practical information about the event, putting the artistic side in the background.
Beginning in the 1950s, the design and function of posters evolved to give greater prominence to images and symbols above the text.
Currently, the main purpose of the posters is to symbolize the edition of the Games in which they were created. They serve to strengthen the identitythe spirit and values of the event, and created with the help of renowned artists, illustrators and designers.
