Simona Halep will be able to return to competition immediately after seeing how the CAS on Tuesday reduced his punishment for doping, which, when applied retroactively, expired in July, from four years to nine months.
The Romanian appealed to CAS against the decision of the International Tennis Federation on September 22, 2023, which removed him from the sport for four years.
In its ruling on Tuesday, the Lausanne court ordered the nine-month exception to be applied to period between October 7, 2022 and July 6, 2023, so that it can be fulfilledalthough it confirms that all results and awards achieved by Halep during that period have been annulled.
Halep, winner of two Grand Slams in her career (Wimbledon and Roland Garros), was investigated for consuming roxadustat, a banned substance, during the US Open, in August 2022.
The CAS concluded that the consumption of this substance, through a contaminated supplement, was accidental. on the part of the tennis player, although he recognizes “a certain degree of negligence” on his part, which justifies the retention of the penalty, albeit a lesser one.
The decision also ordered the ethical tribunal that regulates tennis, the ITIA, pay compensation to Halep of 20,000 Swiss francs (20,800 euros) for legal costs of the trial.
