In 2027 MotoGP It will change significantly, but until then its new features continue to impress. We come from 2023 where the sprint race which was compiled due to the success of the audience and the good reception of the pilots. 2024 will also have something new in the recovery of technical concessions to ‘encourage’ that the Japanese manufacturers, who have lost confidence in the European manufacturers, can gain momentum to recover and balance the championship and stop the being the Ducati Cup before the cycle change.
‘Helping’ factories in trouble is nothing new in the MotoGP era. Looking ahead to 2012 and up to 2015, several subcategories were created to encourage the arrival of new teams and brands, first the CRT and then the Open class, which was able to raise the competition and help factories like Ducati , the current hegemonic brand, which grew.
Later in 2016, a new system of technical concessions was introduced which stated that any brand that made its MotoGP debut after 2013 or that did not win the dry races in 2013, 2014 and 2015 could benefit from the this, 9 machines and open for evolution -7 and the other factories are sealed- and its official drivers have no limitations in making tests (others are made). Suzuki and Aprilia were the first beneficiaries and in 2017, KTM. For the 2017 campaign Suzuki has lost them, for 2021 KTM and for 2023 KTM.
With this 2024 withdrawal of concessions, the once generous will become favored, Honda and Yamaha. The five factories are classified into four groups based on the percentage of points obtained in 2023. In A is Ducati, B is currently vacant, in C are KTM and Aprilia and in D, Honda and Yamaha.
The system provides a continuous update of this classification, which envisages two evaluation windows: one from the beginning to the end of the season, and another from the 2024 summer break to the 2025 summer break.
Ducati It will have 170 tires for testing, just with its testers and at three selected circuits. They will have no wild cards, 7 frozen engines per season (8 if they are over 20 GGPP) and only one aerodynamic update.
KTM and Aprilia They enjoy 220 tires for testing, only for testers and in three circuits, six wildcards and they will have 7 (8 if there are more than 20 GGPP) engines that must be frozen, and an aerodynamic update.
Honda and Yamaha They will have 260 tires for tests that can be carried out by their testers and their regular drivers and at any circuit on the GP calendar. They will have six wild cards, 9 free engines (10 if there are more than 20 GGPP) and two aerodynamic updates.
A more sustainable championship
Another novelty, and found in three categories, is the mandated fuel use of, at least, 40% of non-fossil origin and will reach 100% in 2027.
In the Moto3 and Moto2 categories, they will have Petronas as their sole fuel supplier, the Petronas Primax Pro-Race M2, which has the lowest percentage of non-fossil biofuel. In MotoGP each manufacturer can work with its own fuel supplier and there can be penalties if the regulations are violated during the technical inspection.
Important changes in Moto2 and Moto3
The season in the minor categories begins with new age limits, a Free Practice every Friday morning, which does not count towards qualifying as it already does in MotoGP, and Pirelli replaces Dunlop as the new tire supplier.
