With a goal from Michael Gregoritsch late in the match, Freiburg won 1-0 against West Ham and got oil in a rivalry in which they were inferior to their rival and in which they took advantage, in the first leg of the round of 16. final of the Europa League.
Freiburg has never played in the quarterfinals of a European competition. Their ceiling, for now, is the round of 16 of the Europa League which they also played last season and lost to Juventus. West Ham was his last hurdle before making history and, with a poor score, he passed the first test.
West were better for most of the game, but wasted their chances and returned to London with a goal down. He had several chances to take the victory, but the lack of goals and the stoppage of goalkeeper Noah Atubolu left him without reward.
Jarrod Bowen tried it first with a left-footed shot after quarter of an hour that was saved by the Freiburg goalkeeper; Then, in the second half, it was Mavropanos who sent a header to the German team’s goal post; and in the 64th minute, again, Bowen found a saving hand from Atubolu.
And when everything seemed destined for a tie, Gregoritsch appeared to tip the balance. The Freiburg player came off the bench in the 72nd minute to score a goal at will in the 80th after a deflected shot by Roland Sallai.
It was enough for Freiburg. They didn’t need much more to get ahead of the tie and keep alive their dream of reaching the quarterfinals of the European competition for the first time in their history.
