The world of tennis is about to experience a major earthquake. According to the British newspaper ‘The Telegraph’, Saudi Arabia’s investment fund, PIF, has offered 1,000 million euros to merge the ATP and WTA circuits and gave an ultimatum of ninety days to accept it.
This new joint circuit will offer equal prizes in the men’s and women’s contestssomething that is currently only reserved for Grand Slams and for certain tournaments such as the Masters 1,000.
According to the aforementioned media, Andrea Gaudenzi, president of the ATP, took advantage of the celebration of Indian Wells these days to deliver this news to the nine Masters 1,000 and has already received the support of the All England Club, organizer of Wimbledonwhich accepts the possibility of equalizing the prizes.
The PIF, which already has investments in other sports such as Formula One and golf, along with the LIV circuit, signed a sponsorship agreement with the ATP a few days ago to be the ‘sponsor’ of Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Beijing, the Finals ATP in Turin and the Next Gen Finals in Jeddah, where the best players under the age of 21 come together.
Saudi Arabia’s intention is to achieve 1,000 Masters on its own territory, as well as to hold the WTA Finals, which were played last year in Cancun (Mexico).
