The cycling champion Peter Saganwho seek to participate in Olympic Games in Paris The mountain bike rider after retiring from road racing, announced this Sunday that he will undergo a second heart operation to treat an arrhythmia.
“While training on the rocky roads of Marseille, my heart gave a few jolts. Nothing alarming, but it seems that my heart needs a pit stop,” said the former three-time world champion on his social networks.
“I will have an operation next week and thanks to my friend, the sports cardiology specialist Dr. Roberto Corsetti, I am sure that I will be back in the saddle as soon as possible,” added the 34-year-old Slovakian, seven-time winner of the green jersey at the Tour de France.
In February, a first operation was performed on him at a hospital in Ancona (Italy), where Dr. Corsetti, after an abnormal episode of tachycardia during a mountain bike race in which the Slovak champion’s pulse exceeded 200 beats per minute.
Sagan, the superstar of the last decade, put down his road bike last fall after 121 career victories and now seeks to defend his country’s colors at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in mountain biking, his home sport.
He is scheduled to participate in the first test of the French MTB Cup this weekend in Marseille.
