Despite our efforts, all help for police dog “Billy” came too late; he was quietly euthanized – we reported. But the circumstances and background of the case show that a lot could have gone wrong. The Ministry of the Interior has been silent about it for weeks.
The fully trained assistance dog “Billy” was kept in solitary confinement for a year and a half in about 30 square meters in the Strebersdorf police dog center – he was considered unpredictable and feisty. But instead of working with the animal or at least keeping it species-specific, those responsible turned a deaf ear. The animal corner “Krone” also got involved, but apart from reassurances nothing happened; in January the fate of the Belgian Shepherd Dog was sealed.
Whistleblowers are in turmoil
You no longer hear any barking from “Billy’s kennel”, but other voices are getting louder. In recent weeks, several informants from police circles have repeatedly contacted the ‘Krone’ animal corner to report serious abuses.
In particular, the planned promotion of the person responsible in the ‘Billy’ case to head of department is met with incomprehension within the workforce. There is talk of bullying, lack of leadership quality and abuse of office, and the associated internal procedures are already underway.
Union on the move
The further career move will probably only be interrupted at this point due to the unanimous rejection of the central committee of the police union; the Ministry of the Interior refused to provide information at the request of “Krone”, citing data protection.
Friendship economy?
Insiders cite the close friendship since childhood with a high-ranking police officer and contacts at the highest political level as the main reason why an individual can act at his own discretion.
Questions about questions
The lack of relevant training and the fact that the person concerned has never trained a service dog himself are also heavily criticized. The file in the ‘Billy’ case is also full of question marks; for example, a genetic defect was cited as the reason for the lethal injection.
But why does such an analysis require such a long period, during which the dog has been in solitary confinement for a year and a half? And why is something like this not tested before the Republic invests almost 34,000 euros in training a service dog?
Health causes in the dark
It is doubtful that an autopsy has not been ordered for the Belgian Shepherd Dog. This was the only way to gain certainty about the animal’s health and draw conclusions for the future to prevent such problems.
Where is the dog buried?
The “Krone” asked the Ministry of the Interior for an explanation about all these allegations a few weeks ago, but despite inquiries they have not yet provided an answer. Where exactly the dog is buried remains a mystery for the time being. Also with the service dog “Billy” – he was most likely just thrown in the waste container for carcasses.
