The NWSL experienced a historic moment this weekend in Kansas City, where the Current debuted CPKC Stadium, an 11,500-seat stadium that cost more than $120 million and marks a new era.
“From the beginning we felt it was important to have our own stadium, an elite facility built for a professional women’s soccer team. That was the first point,” said Current owner Chris Long in a recent interview with EFE.
The Current produced an excellent 5-4 victory over the Thorns, the 2022 champions, to get the season off to a good start.
The Spirit of Adrián González, interim coach until the arrival of Jonatan Giráldez starting this summer, was also unable to do so. The match against Reign, in their first season without legendary Megan Rapinoewas decided by a penalty goal from Bethany Balcer.
The Chicago Red Stars also won their debut in the field of one of the two new franchises debuting this season, the Utah Royals (2-0).
The other, Bay FC, based in San Francisco, won 1-0 on Sunday against Angel City.
The North Carolina Courage’s resounding 5-1 win over the Houston Dash was also notable.
Current Gotham champions Juan Carlos Amorós and Jesús Botello will debut next week. Last Friday, they lost the Challenge Cup, the equivalent of the Super Cup, against the San Diego Wave.
