The coach of the Brazilian women’s soccer team, Arthur Elias, said this Wednesday that the Canary could make history at the Paris Olympics, despite being classified in group C with Spain and Japan, two of the strongest teams in the field.
“Analyzing our rivals and current performance, I think we fell with the strongest teams (…), but that will not influence the start of the competition,” said the Brazilian coach, quoted in a statement from the Brazilian Confederation of Soccer.
Aside from Japan and Spain, the current world champions, Brazil will face the qualifier between Nigeria and South Africa in the April match.
Brazil will debut with the African team that qualified on July 25, at the Bordeaux Stadium, a day before the Olympic Games begin.
The Canarinha will then face Japan – world champion in 2011 – at the Parc des Princes, in Paris, on July 28, and will conclude the group stage, on the 31st, with a match against Spain, also in Bordeaux.
For the Brazilian coach, knowing the competitors will allow the team to adjust the technical planning and improve the performance until the tournament. “We can make history,” he emphasized.
The Brazilian women’s team won two silver medals at the 2004 Athens Games and 2008 Beijing.
In the last tournaments in Tokyo, which took place in 2021, Brazil was eliminated by Canada in the quarterfinals
