Japanese Hideki Matsuyama was disqualified Thursday from the Memorial tournament for using an irregular golf clubreported the PGA in a statement.
Matsuyama, winner of this tournament in 2014, was allowed violation of regulations prohibiting players from placing substances in their golf clubs which can change the normal impact on the ball.
The chief judge stressed that the players they can add small marks with markers for convenience in the gamebut the club used by Matsuyama exceeded the allowable limit.
The Japanese did not know that his cane was irregular and, when the judge approached him to ask for information on the second hole, he admitted that he used it in the first, which caused his disqualification.
The chief judge of the contest, Steve Rintoul, he praised Matsuyama for being “very honest” with him.
The Memorial tournament will be held until next Sunday at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
