Iga Swiateknumber one in women’s tennis in the world, with a comeback, and the American Coco Gauff (n.3) qualified this Sunday for the round of 16 of the Miami Open final.
The Pole defeated Czech Linda Noskova (31) by 6-7(7), 6-4 and 6-4 in a tight contest lasting two hours and 33 minutes while Gauff had an easier match against French Oceane Dodin (n.84), whom she defeated 6-4 and 6-0 in one hour and 4 minutes.
After the elimination of Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (n.2), Swiatek and Gauff are the two best-ranked tennis players which continues in the Florida Masters 1,000.
Swiatek will face Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the round of 16 (n.16) while Gauff will face the French Caroline Garcia (n.27).
Swiatek is coming off a win in Indian Wells and will try to seal the ‘Sunshine Double’, which the double victory in Indian Wells and Miami in the same year is known as.
Only four women’s competitive tennis players have achieved this: Steffi Graf (1994 and 1996), Kim Clijsters (2005), Victoria Azarenka (2016) and Swiatek herself (2022).
