The last round of XX Spanish PGA Doubles Championship there was a flurry of big dates: with two couples, the Navarrese David Borda and Borja Virtoand the brothers Nacho and Manu Elvirahand in hand, marking territory and bringing chaos to the final holes on this magnificent course by Seve Ballesteros, Izki Golfwhich hosts the second test of the national circuit Tumi Spain Golf Tour.
Borja and David, who emerged as leaders to play in the final round, started slowly and seemed to struggle to warm up, but in nine seconds they came together: David aced the 10th and 12th holes ; and Borja on 13 and 14 to even things up on the scoreboard with two holes to go. That’s when the magic came from the hands of Borja Virto and a putt from outside the green on the 17th to go up by one; and David Borda finished 18th with another birdie, while Manu Elvira got lost in the forest of Izki Golf and Nacho was unable to force a playoff.
“It has been a great week, we had a lot of fun. The PGA circuit is growing more and more, great sponsors are getting involved and this is what we need to keep growing. We have overcome the tension of the last holes and now we can enjoy the victory. We loved playing this tournament in pairs. We are friends, we get along, we travel together, we know each other well and we will definitely do it again next year,” commented Virto and Borda, who finished with 64 strokes (-19), two ahead of those seconds.
Manu and Nacho Elvira finished in second position (63, -17 overall) and enjoyed this first experience of playing a tournament as a pair and together for the first time in a professional tournament.
“For me this is a dream come true. I adored my brother so much, and playing with him was a luxury. I learned a lot; It also taught me a lot,” commented Manu Elvira. “The PGA is doing things very well and the Spanish professionals deserve a good circuit and I am sure that steps are being taken in the right direction. We liked the experience and as long as the European calendar allows it , we will be back,” said Nacho Elvira.
Third place Luca Vacarisas and Javier Sainz (-15); Scott Fernández and Carlos Pigem finished fourth with -14 and the fifth position went to Juan Salama and Pedro Oriol from Madrid.
