Belgian cyclist Wout Van Aert, who suffered multiple fractures after falling in the Through Flanders classic ten days ago, began his rehabilitation this Thursday with a four kilometer walk, as announced on social networks.
The rider of the Visma-Lease a Bike teamfor the two big goals of his spring season (the Tour of Flanders won by Mathieu van der Poel on Sunday and Paris-Roubaix this coming weekend), does not seem to have abandoned his ambition to participate in the Giro de Italy, which starts on May 4.
However, the challenge was complicated: Van Aert suffered fractures to several ribs, the sternum and a collarbone. But the rider showed his optimism on social media: “If you don’t go forward, you go backwards,” he commented, without mentioning the withdrawal from the Giro.
His teammate and leader in stage races, Jonas Vingegaard, I would prefer to see him participate in the Tour de France, which Van Aert has already dropped this year.
“His health came first. I understand his desire to race in the Giro. But in the Tour de France he always proved to be an important teammate. His presence in the Grand Boucle will be positive for me and the team,” declared the Dane .in the Dutch newspaper ‘De Telegraaf’.
Van Aert’s decision should be based on his main goal for the summer: win medals at the Paris Olympics in the road race and time trial.
