After the national team’s break, the season enters its final phase. In the next month and a half, all national and European competition titles will be decided and at this point only four teams are seeking to achieve a treble. A great fact: three of them are led by Spanish coaches.
City of Manchester
Premier, FA Cup and Champions
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City achieved a historic feat last season by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, European Super Cup and Club World Cup. This season they have also lost the Community Shield and League Cup but are aiming for the remaining titles. In the Premier League, with eight games remaining, they are third, three points behind leaders Liverpool. In the FA Cup on April 20 they face Chelsea in the semifinals at Wembley, while in the Champions League they meet Real Madrid again in the quarterfinals on April 9 and 17.
Paris Saint-Germain
Ligue 1, Coupe and Champions
Luis Enrique, like Guardiola, is also in a position to achieve the treble in charge of PSG. Leaving the Super Cup they won against Toulouse in January (2-0), Ligue 1 is almost in the bag as they have a 12-point lead over Brest with seven games remaining. Furthermore, on Wednesday, after eliminating Rennes 1-0, they reached the final of the Coupe de France to be played on May 25 against Lyon in Lille. And in the Champions League, an exciting quarter-final tie against Barcelona awaits them (April 10 and 16).
Liverpool
Premier, Carabao Cup and Europa League
Liverpool want to offer a treble to Jürgen Klopp after announcing he will leave their bench at the end of the season. On 25 February, they won the Carabao Cup (League Cup) defeating Chelsea at Wembley with an extra-time goal from captain Virgil Van Dijk. In the Premier League the Reds are top, with two points ahead of Arsenal and three of Manchester City, with eight games remaining. And in the Europa League they will face Atalanta in the quarterfinals (April 11 and 18).
Bayer Leverkusen
Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Europa League
Bayer Leverkusen are about to complete a historic season led by Xabi Alonso and are finally no longer known as ‘Neverkusen’ due to their failure in the finals. All that remains is to find out the date when it will mathematically win the first Bundesliga in its history because it is 13 points ahead of Bayern Munich, winner of the last eleven editions, with seven days to go. On Wednesday they beat Fortuna Düsseldorf (4-0) and reached the final on May 25 at the Berlin Olympic against Kaiserslautern, another Second Division team. And in the Europa League they face an interesting quarterfinal tie against West Ham (April 11 and 18).
