Fernando Alonso made one himself again in the classification of Japanese GP. The Spaniard pulled an ace up his sleeve in his final Q3 attempt and put the Aston Martin in fifth position just four thousandths of Sainz’s time and less than half a second. Max Verstappenthe ‘poleman’ in Suzuki.
What is surprising is that the Asturian himself did not believe that he could make the last big turn. After the first attempt he was in seventh place and the radio told him that if the tenth was low he would be in fourth. The Spaniard admits he doesn’t know how to improve it.
“You’re seventh, but one and a half tenths away from fourth,” they told him from Aston Martin.
“I don’t know what to do to be faster, man. I think it was a good lap”he answered.
Well, once he got back on track, he was one of the few who lowered his time until he stopped it. 1:28,686 brought down that tithe which he himself found himself unable to attain. A new genius from Alonso that allowed him to surpass direct rivals such as Lewis Hamilton or Oscar Piastri.
Going into Sunday’s race, he is confident that the improvements introduced to the AMR24 will help him increase his race pace and be even more competitive.
